The right way to celebrate Taiwanese athletes
Since 1981, Taiwan has competed in the Olympics under the name "Chinese Taipei" — a compromise made between Olympic committees at a time when the old Kuomintang (KMT) regime still claimed to be not only the ruler of Taiwan, but also the legitimate government of China as well.
Today, the government of Taiwan is no longer an authoritarian dictatorship that makes imperialist territorial claims, but a vibrant democracy of 24 million people. Yet, the name "Chinese Taipei" remains Taiwan's moniker in international sporting events.
Team Taiwan should not have to be an expression of protest. Like Team USA or Team India, this should just be a name for the athletes of Taiwan to represent their home country, or for fans to root for their heritage country. But Taiwan continues to face difficulties and pressures in international organizations.
While Team Taiwan is a way to celebrate the athletes of Taiwan, it is also a request to the broader world to Let Taiwan Be Taiwan.
